Instruction Practice 1 - Beginner Moves
Objectives:
Learning how to teach the beginner moves
No students, only other assistants and instructor
Class Focus:
Floor, vault, and wall - Teaching movements
Learn to be concise and quick with the lesson (30secs – 1 minute). Let the students practice a few times before
Avoid over explaining at the start. Let people move then add extra explanations.
If you can have everyone practice something at the same time the better the result may be.
Student discipline
Make it about the action, not the person.
Help them understand the rules instead of just saying, “you can’t do that.”
Help them feel more involved of the community by enlisting their assistance.
Homework:
Part 1 - Practice warm-up/cool-down exercises every night. Say the moves out loud as you do them.
Part 2 - We practiced explaining movements to each other. Answer the following questions.
What did you find challenging about explaining the moves?
What did you learn from trying to explain them? (if anything)
What can you improve on going forward? How do you think you'll get there?
Class 4 – Beginner Class Design

Focus on the section “Beginner Class Design - Equipment & Courses”.
What aspects of designing beginner classes and courses surprised you the most?

Class 3 – Instructor Etiquette
Objectives:
Better understand instructor etiquette.
Class Focus:
“Aim to progress, not to succeed”
While we do want to give students a feeling of success, we should also demonstrate how to manage failure while learning.
While doing so, instructors can show students that we want to continuously progress, and progress doesn’t mean success every time.
Did any students progress even if they didn’t succeed at the overall movement? What did the instructor do to give steps to get to success?
Homework:
Re-read page 5 of “Instructor Responsibilities” (Instructor Etiquette).
Of these concepts, which one(s) do you already demonstrate?
Of these concepts, which one(s) do you need to (or want to) work on? How might you go about working on this?

Community Development
Improve on presence
Class Focus:
Assist students who are struggling with a move or course (if any).
Learn the names of 2 students.
During free time:
Find a student who is working on something (warped wall, flip, etc…) and offer to give them a tip.
If you see a student not doing anything, go talk to them. Possibly encourage them to try something with you.
Homework:
Re-read page 4 of “Instructor Responsibilities” section about Community Development.
Did you utilize any technique in the list to use with students? If so, what did you use?
Is there a social techniques you utilized that was not on the list? If so, what was it and why did you find it effective?
Is there anything you think you could have done better when engaging the students?
Did you feel comfortable engaging with a new person and learning their names? Why or why not?
